How To Be Healthy

Diet

God's ideal is for me to get a balanced diet of wholesome natural food, according to His direction. It gives me energy to fulfill His plan for my life.

 

I choose to eat a balanced, nutritious diet.

 

Definition

Diet means: eating the proper variety and combinations of foods such as: natural foods, simple fare, balanced menu.

Diet related virtues: fruit, grains, nuts, vegetables.

Student Life Applications

Because I need good nutrition to keep my body strong to do God’s will, I will:

Eat a variety of fruits, nuts, cereals and natural foods at regular times each day;
Avoid snacking and eating junk food and drinks, such as chips, sodas and candies;
Avoid eating between meals;
Eat a balanced diet each day;
Choose food that is prepared in a healthy way, avoiding high fat, high sugar, high salt items;
Choose food according to God’s original diet, avoiding animal products such as meat;

Student Activities

1. Bring to class different forms of sugar and compare them
2. Bring to class packaged foods and show the value charts and compare the sugar content
3. Visit a supermarket with a list of foods to find out where they come from.
4. Have a taste test and group foods accordingly.
5. Have a smell test and compare with the food groups
6. Compare foods eaten at parties with foods eaten at regular meals.
7. Make a chart for dating and spoilage listing how long foods are safe to eat.
8. Prepare a lunch at school for parents
9. Prepare a breakfast for another class.
10. Discuss food choices promoted by the Adventist church. Give reasons why the church has made these choices.
11. Discuss the main food groups and plan a balanced meal
12. Hold a Nations Night and serve foods from different cultures
13. Talk about the Bible list of clean and unclean foods.
14. Talk about how the Bible says you are to prepare meat if it must be eaten
15. Visit a supermarket and record the different food groups.
16. Get the students to write down what they ate yesterday and then analyse it according to the different requirements from the food groups.
17. Plan a Target Week when each student will bring a new food to try and to tell why it is a healthful choice.
18. Discuss the role of advertising in the choice of food intake.
19. Plan a meal and have the students write a shopping list.
20. Discuss the different eating rules for various groupings, e.g. home, restaurants, school, other cultures, etc.

Primary:
Tell or write about a time when you saw someone eating a simple diet.
Tell or write about when you saw the hurt and unhappiness when someone had not eaten a nutritious diet.
How do you think God feels when He sees people who eat nutritiously?
How do you feel when you eat nutritious meals?
What makes you want to eat nutritiously?
What is the opposite of simple diets? Who makes us act that way?

Middle:
Why does God care if I eat simple food?
What difference does it make whether I eat a simple diet or not?
What effect would it have on my future if I did not choose a simple diet?
How would people treat me differently if I did or didn’t choose a simple diet?
How would I feel about myself if I did or did not choose a simple diet?
Give some reasons why you think it is best to choose a simple diet. Why would someone do differently?
What makes choosing a simple diet better than the opposite?
List some ways that a person might choose a simple diet without anyone noticing?
List 3 situations where a person could choose a simple diet at his work, home, or at the shopping mall.
Is it possible for a person to get better choosing a simple diet? Explain.

High school:
Would you practice choosing simple foods if no one was checking on you? Your parents, school, or the law?
What is the alternative to a simple diet and what do you see as the results of that choice?
Would you keep quiet if someone paid you a lot of money not to eat a nutritious diet?
If someone in a group spoke out against simple foods would you speak up to give the other side?
Are you willing to put some money toward supporting nutritious diets in your city, class, work?
